    About the Project

With 1.3 billion tonnes of food wasted each year, food waste is a major contributor to global environmental impacts. The NSW government has mandated food waste recycling via the FOGO (food organics garden organics) mandates.

To support the transition, the EPA commissioned Leyla Acaroglu and her team at Circular Futures to conduct a research project to identify the major pain points experienced and systems-level opportunities for effective food waste recycling interventions at scale across three venue types: pubs and clubs, large shopping centres, and medium-sized supermarkets in NSW.

    What’s in the Report?

Assessing 9 NSW-based businesses across 12 site visits, the report not only identifies universal impact areas, but also provides a series of systems maps highlighting focus points to effectively implement food waste recycling in commercial settings.
